Kaleidoskop 2.0

Terakhir gw bikin tulisan tentang Kaleidoskop (baca: catatan congkak) pada 13 May 2013. :p Ga juga sih, somehow gw emang suka underestimate on things God provided to my life. Most of the time, I also tend to not appreciate on things that I achieved. So maybe this is one of ways where I can count my blessing (and of course brag about myself). :p

1. I worked in Kiasu-land for almost 11 months.

1. Singapore

Selama hamper 11 bulan gw berdesak-desakkan di MRT dan bersempit-sempitan di HDB-nya Lee Kuan Yew. It was definitely a great experience for me. Singapore is like the center of South East Asia. It has the best infrastructure & public transportation, offers the highest living quality, and is boastful for its highest income per capita. For me, it was such a comfortable life. They are a double-edge sword unfortunately. I spent so many weekends in Indonesia due to the cheap airfares between Indonesia and Singapore. I also spent my money not in a frugal way due to a fact that Singapore has very low income tax rates. However, when I looked back to the time where I lived in Singapore, I can’t complain with it. Strolling around the sophisticated sky crappers, eating cheap but delicious hawker foods, navigating around the city comfortably, and having a plethora options for shopping are just few things that you wouldn’t get easily in other mega cities in the world. It is weird coming out from my mind, but… I do miss you Singapore. Related posts: this, this, this, and this.

2. I made (really good) friendship with some Indian friends

Team

Most of people who worked with me in Singapore are Indians. I spent my New Year eve with them where some of them got drunk, watched a famous Bollywood movie in a cinema, tasted so many different kind of Indian foods (goby Manchurian is my favorite!!), unsuccessfully learned their language, discussed Indian politics and culture, and many other things that I will always cherish when I think about.

3. In Asia, I travelled to two new countries (Japan and Cambodia)_ and two China special territories (Hongkong and Macau)!

5. Macau

Japan was super. This is a big statement, but so far I think Japan is the best travel destination for me. Yes, San Fransisco is cool, Prague is beautiful, and Wien is lovely. But, somehow, nothing can beat the happy feeling, the satisfaction everytime I recall my experience in Japan. It was such a beautiful and unique country. I wouldn’t think twice if I get any chance to visit it again next time.Cambodia, Hongkong, and Macau are also cool. Especially in Hongkong and Macau, I did really enjoy my time with my travelling companions. It was the first time we did traveling together since we spent so many times together in Bandung. Will definitely need to do it again before all of us get married. :p

4. In Indonesia, I visited three new places: Palembang, Lombok, and Labuan Bajo (Pulau Komodo).

4. Komodo

Pulau Komodo is the highlight. Literally, it was one of the most beautiful nature that I’ve ever seen. It was a quick and random decision that I made to visit Pulau Komodo. And it is also one of the best decisions that I’ve ever made. Heaven in the East. Before you die, if you have any chance you should see this God’s masterpiece.

 5. I tried vertical caving in Gua Jomblang near Jogjakarta

 6. I watched two musical shows and one play

6. Show

Dulu banget gw pernah nonton musical show berjudul Rent. Music, costume, or story wise, this musical show is not as good as Lion King broadway yang gw tonton sebelumnya, tapi koreografernya jauh lebih bagus. Play yang terakhir yang gw tonton berjudul “Fat Pig”. Gw tonton bareng manajer gw. Di pertunjukkan itu  gw lebih banyak ketawa.😀

 7. A house and a car

8. rumah

I was thinking twice whether I should write this point or not. But at the end, I thought “why not?”. They are still a blessing for me. And bodo amat kalau gw keliatan sombong. Sejak kembali dari US tahun lalu, gw berpikir buat mengubah tabungan gw jadi property. Alhasil selama bulan-bulan kerja gw di Singapore, I live check by check.

 8. I moved to Europe!

2. Jerman

One of the biggest decisions that I made in this year. Beberapa minggu sebelum gw pindah rasanya berat banget. Bahkan gw sempet agak depresi. Bayangan bahwa gw kudu mulai adaptasi lagi, cari temen baru lagi, kesepian, jauh dari Indo, ngalamin gegar budaya lagi, repot ngurusin pindahan, dan hal-hal merepotkan lainnya bikin gw down.  Hampir 6 bulan gw menetap di Nuremberg, sebuah kota di provinsi Bavaria. Finally I can say that I have settled down. I have lived in a new apartment, been planted in a local church, found my safety net through my Indo friends, adapted with my new job, got a German driving license (wohoooo!) and  a work permit (Blue Card). Walau sebenernya masih ada satu pe-er besar buat gw yaitu buat belajar Bahasa Jerman. :p

9. In Europe, I travelled to four new countries (Germany, Austria, Czech, and the Netherlands)

3. Praha

Di Jerman gw udah kunjungin Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Darmstadt, Wurzburg, Erlangen, Munich, dan tentu saja kota gw sendiri Nuremberg. Gw juga kunjungin Amsterdam, Den Haag, Rotterdam, dan Vollendam di Belanda, Praha di Ceko, dan  Wina di Austria. It is like a dream comes true. What is the next destination? Guess?…….. It will be Queen Elisabeth’s land.😀

10. My writing was published in a book! Wohoo!

7. Jokowi

It is not a book per se. It is (just) a writing compilation which I participated as one of the writers. However it is still a bucket list checked for me. And of course I answered yes.  The thing that makes me proud is the other writers who also have their writings in the book. There are Dewi Lestari and Pandji P. , two public figures who I admire. You can download the book here.

For the insecure Yoel, the one who keeps feeling worry and under-appreciating himself, I should say “Good job, Yoel!” . Let’s keep having fun and embrace your life.
